Selected Evidence & Results

Wona Sanana provides 20 years of comprehensive ECD programming, underpinned by sound research and validated results.

We are one of the lead organizations influencing government policy toward increased involvement and budgetary commitment toward the ECD sector in the country.

  • Co-developed and piloted Mozambique’s National Preschool Curriculum adopted in 2011.

  • We led the convening and coordination of the first-ever International Conference on ECD in Mozambique, which saw the government officially adopting a more proactive stance and commitment towards ECD policy and programming.

  • We are currently engaged in ongoing technical assistance to the Ministry of Labor, Gender and Social Welfare (MLGSW) and Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) on ECD, play-based learning, and parent education.

Our comprehensive, family-focused model yields measurable community results:

  • 1,300+ caregivers have completed parenting sessions.

  • 400+ children (0-2 years range) are supported through weekly home visits.

  • 5 community preschools have been established or rehabilitated.

  • 25 ECD educators and 75 ECD committee members have been trained.

  • 441 children are receiving daily nutritious meals with regular growth monitoring.

Our youth programming builds life skills and economic pathways:

  • 12,000 adolescents and youth (14–19) have been engaged across Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane.

  • We have documented increases in optimism, resilience, social & financial skills, and youth-led micro-enterprise formation.

We strengthen adherence and protection for the most vulnerable families:

  • 165 children on ART are followed-up on and supported.

  • 250 adolescent/single mothers and 150 orphans and vulnerable children have been supported.

  • The program has ensured the strengthening of adherence via treatment units and community case management.

Impact & Data

Our Guiding Principles: The SEEDS Framework

Our SEEDS framework articulates our commitment to quality, scalability, and sustainability.

S - Scalability

  • Model components are modular (home visiting, community preschool, caregiver education, clubs, ART adherence support) and designed to run on public systems with community cost-share, thus enabling district-to-national scale.

E - Endurance

  • The organization has 20+ years of continuous operation and experience working with diversified partners (government, multilaterals, and private foundations). We ensure materials and curricula are housed in government structures for sustainability, and community committees maintain local assets.

E - Evidence-based

  • We undertake routine monitoring of ECD children’s enrolment, developmental milestones, learning readiness, nutrition, protection referrals, and youth outcomes. We utilize pre/post tools for caregiver practices and youth financial literacy, and undertake programme reviews and internal/external evaluations.

D - Drive

  • The leadership team possesses a track record of agility, rapid iteration, co-creation with ministries and civil society, and urgency around inclusion in low-resource settings.

S - Servant Leadership

  • Wona Sanana has over the years become a trusted partner to government. We implement child-safeguarding, data protection, and financial management policies, and have solid board governance in place for oversight.

Year Strategic Plan (Our Future)

Over the next 3-5 years, Wona Sanana anticipates accelerating its impact through the following priorities:

Model Deepening & Expansion

We will deepen the ECD model (Maputo Province) and replicate to adjacent districts as well as expand to districts in other provinces with government co-financing. This includes increased advocacy and policy influencing towards more responsive policy and budgeting among relevant government agencies.

Health Support & Prevention

We will double the number of children on ART and young mothers reached through adherence groups, parental support interventions, and home-visits linked to treatment units and social services. We will also focus on early stimulation for pregnant adolescents and first-time mothers.

Youth Scale & Livelihoods

We plan to scale adolescent clubs to reach 18,000 adolescents, expanding youth enterprise pathways (savings groups, apprenticeships).

Quality & Technical Capacity

We aim to strengthen data systems (case management, developmental screening), language-adapted materials, and teacher/caregiver coaching to raise quality at scale. We will continue to provide training services and contribute to the development of the technical and institutional capacity of networks that promote ECD agendas.
